Wait, What is the Mamprugu Unicycle Club?

In 2020, Trey Haun was visiting the United States with his family. Just as they were planning to return to their home in Ghana, the sudden outbreak of the pandemic hit. Stranded in a foreign country due to travel restrictions, Trey found solace in an unexpected hobby: unicycling. Finally, when the restrictions were lifted, the Haun family boarded the first flight back to Ghana, and Trey carried a something new with him—his unicycle.

Back in Ghana.

When Trey got back to Ghana, his closest friends were amazed by the unicycle and anxious to learn. He started teaching them to ride, and his dad found a couple more unicycles for them. The three were the talk of the town as they would ride around and draw crowds of interested kids.

After Trey won medals for Ghana at the Unicycling World Championships in 2022, he went viral on Ghanaian social media (check out this BBC article) and garnered international attention.

More and more kids wanted to learn to ride and as Trey got more unicycles (some donated, some his parents purchased) the club was officially formed.

As of August 2023, there are 13 club members and they meet nearly every weekday afternoon to practice and train. Due to popular demand, they are now performing at special events at schools and even major festivals. They have become a huge source of pride for the traditional kingdom of Mamprugu in northeastern Ghana.

HOW YOU CAN HELP.

The club is looking for more financial support to allow them to purchase the following:

- safety gear (helmets, shin guards)

- shoes (some kids are riding in flipflops!)

- jerseys (for the team can wear at their performances)

- unicycle parts (pedals, spokes, saddles, cranks... everything breaks eventually)

- more unicycles (by far the biggest expense)
